Fire at Red Chillies

If you’re looking for a truly authentic burn-the-roof-of-your-mouth-off Pakistani Chicken Tikka then I have the perfect place for you. More on that tikka later, but first I’ve got to mention one caveat, which is that the seating is very basic. If you’re a real food lover, but not looking particularly for a fine dining experience, then you’ll be in for a treat.

And if you’re Pakistani, you just might forget where you are for a little while. Close your eyes and imagine that you’re in a typical restaurant in Lahore. Quite a delicious escape!

Red Chillies in Aziziya

The eatery that keeps it all so real is called Red Chillies, and boy did they name it well! I’m quite sure they’ve never received complaints pertaining to a lack of spice. We have visited a number of times now and their taste has been consistent every time.

Their Chicken Tikka, a choice of leg or breast piece, amazingly at SR8 only, is well-marinated, flavourful and very tender. If you want the complete experience, then eat it with a Paratha – only SR3. I had to check the menu twice though, because although it is called a paratha, it is more reminiscent of a rich and fried ‘poori’. For a lighter (and healthier) version, go for the Chapati as an accompaniment. At SR1 for 3 pieces, you can’t go wrong.

The Chicken Tikka, simple and packed full of flavour

If your taste buds are not used to very spicy food but you still want to experience the intense flavours, you can request a less spicy Chicken Tikka. They will basically wash off the spicy marinade before cooking the piece.

Beyond this champion of a dish, we would also recommend the Beef Seekh Kabab (minced beef grilled on a skewer), great value at 4 pieces for SR20. The Beef Bihari Kebab, a well-marinaded and totally melt-in-the-mouth kebab is also worth a try at SR20 for a plate.

Although a relatively recent addition to the Jeddah restaurant scene, Red Chillies has entered with a bang. It is quite packed on weekends and seems to be quite a favourite with the desi community. Give it a try and tell us what you think in the comments below.

Price per head: SR15-20 per head
Jeddah Blog rating: 8/10. Perfect marks for authenticity and flavour, but they lose out on space and ambience.
Location: Aziziya District, opposite Flamingo Mall, tel: 059 025 4449

If you’d like to try authentic *real* Pakistani food (particularly clean as well) try Kashmir Nights in As Salamah. It’s in a lovely area, and they even do catering. A family business that’s been running for decades. It used to be in Riyadh but now in Jeddah. Hugely popular, especially for big parties and catering and even for just a regular dine-in experience or take-away (I love their chicken tikka too).
