An interview with Marina of Confetti
Marina Bolisacova is the creative mind behind‘Confetti’, a unique cake-decorating business in Jeddah. She participated in ‘The Joy of Spring Cake Decoration Contest’ held in Jeddah in March 2010 and her cake won first prize.
When Jeddah Blog contacted Marina, she was gracious enough to chat with us and give us some insight into how she came up with the idea of ‘Confetti’, the classes she conducts, and she even promised a sweet treat for one of our lucky readers. But more on that later…
Hi Marina, can you start by telling us a little about yourself?
Marina: Hi! I am 34 years old, married and have 2 beautiful 6-year-old daughters. I majored in English language and literature at the University. I have been living in Saudi Arabia for 11 years,7 out of them in Jeddah.
Please tell us how you came up with the idea of creating your own cake decorating business?
Marina: I started decorating cakes when my twins turned one. I wanted something tasteful, beautiful and tasty, but couldn’t find anything in Jeddah’s confectionery market to meet the criteria. I discovered the world of fondant and royal icing one year ago and have been hooked ever since!
What is the idea behind ‘Confetti’ and how are you different from other cake decorators in Jeddah?
Marina: ‘Confetti’ was founded in February 2010. Our motto is ‘Sweet, Chic and Unique!’ and I create cakes, cupcakes and cookies that are unique to Jeddah not only in looks, but also in flavour, using a combination of ingredients traditional to the European culinary school. I like to challenge myself in every cake that I make, creating something new, unusual and sometimes very non-cake looking.
Do you have a favourite cake that you have created?
Marina: I love all of my cakes. They are the fruits of my love and labour, with carefully thought through designs, impeccable finish and attention to detail. My favourites, however, are my floral cakes, with every flower painstakingly recreated in sugar paste with botanical accuracy and precision.
Not only do you make and decorate cakes, but you are also spreading the joy of cake decorating to others. Can you tell us about the classes you will be conducting?
Marina: I enjoy teaching others how to work with fondant. Due to many requests I have received, Confetti is organizing master classes on cake, cupcake and cookie decoration for children of different ages, and separate master classes for adults.
What is it you love most about cake decorating?
Tell us about the charity you support through ‘Confetti’.
Marina: I support a local charity Rabat Rehab – a safe home for abused and mistreated women and their children. I decided to raise money for Rabat Rehab and auctioned off a cake I made through my Facebook group. All the proceeds from the cake went to charity. There’s an important charity event in Jeddah coming up in February and ‘Confetti’ will participate as one of the contributors.
Marina: You can contact me through my Facebook group Confetti Jeddah or by e-mail – email@example.com.
