Jeddah’s Cake Boss: An Interview with Niffer Khan
Meet my friend, Niffer Khan, Jeddah’s very own Cake Boss!
Earlier this year, I discovered that Niffer had begun to bake cakes for friends, and then she started taking orders. Her cakes gained in popularity as she gained in expertise. Recently I asked her to bake a Hannah Montana cake for my daughter and she didn’t disappoint! Her cakes not only look great but taste amazing too. Niffer just finished an order for 552 cupcakes and took time out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions for Jeddah Blog:
Niffer, how did you get into baking and cake decorating. Was it something you have always been interested in?
A close friend of mine had been into cake decorating and every time I saw her pictures I wanted to learn how she did it. Baking I knew, but the decorating intrigued me. So I offered a friend (Maleeha Kamal) that I would make her daughter’s birthday cake and ended up making two! From there on, there was no looking back. I was royally hooked to the craft.
Everywhere …books, internet, tv shows in general, anything and everything.
Do you make only birthday cakes or have you made cakes for other occasions too?
I’ve made wedding cakes, for anniversaries, birth announcements, get well soon cakes, eid, new year’s, and the list goes on….
How long does it take you to make a typical birthday cake?
Any where between 3 to 4 days, depending on how intricate the design is.
Which was the best cake you ever made, and why?
A circus train. I enjoyed making it most because it was bright, colourful and fun.
Well, if you had asked me this question a year ago I would have said anyone could do it if they applied themselves to it. Now I think you may try and learn and practice, but at the end of the day very few people have the knack for it. It’s not as easy as it seems!!!!
Are you currently taking orders for birthday cakes, and what sort of price range do you offer to your customers. How can they contact you?
Yes, I’m taking orders. The price range depends on what I have been asked to make, and the size. Those interested may contact me through e-mail : email@example.com or via facebook.
Do you have any tips for budding cake bakers, or someone who might be thinking of taking cake-making up as a hobby?
